GSW Competencies

These three documents serve to measure the degree of skill competency of social work students and practitioners, specializing in aging, in practice with older adults and their families. There are two iterations of the "Scale", the first scale is a 40 item instrument that is divided into 4 domains: Values and Ethics; Assessment; Intervention; and Aging Services, Programs and Policies. This scale is a shorter, revised version of the Social Work with Aging Skill Competency Scale I that was developed by the Geriatric Social Work Practicum Partnership Program (PPP). The instrument was originally designed as a pre-post test to measure the effect of the PPP’s innovative field education program in aging on the skills of participating graduate social work students who are specializing in aging. This instrument can also be used for educational planning after the pre-test. The second scale is a more recent iteration developed by California Social Work Education Center (CalSWEC).
